Humans need warmth, light, and connection to thrive. Find your inner flame and a cozy spot for connection this winter at Moth & Flame Meditation sessions. These meditations are intended to nourish our human need to connect to ourselves and others in the warmth of bright lights that, while artificial, can have the same mood boosting and energy enhancing effects of exposure to daylight.

The entire session is from 9-10am. Sessions begin with orientation followed by guided meditation for 20 minutes. Meditation will begin in low warm-toned light, and room light will gradually be increased during the meditation to simulate a sunrise. At the end of the meditation folks are invited to help themselves to available coffee, tea, or snacks and, if interested, spend some time connecting with others (or just yourself!) near a therapeutic-grade bright light. You may bring your own light—they may be rented free at the library or purchased online—or borrow one of our lights if there are enough to go around!

Therapeutic grade bright lights are considered low risk since they are less bright than actual daylight and do not emit harmful UV rays. That said, it may not be safe for folks taking photosensitizing medications or who have retinal disease. You should also check with your doctor before attending if you have been diagnosed with severe depression or bipolar disorder, just to make sure it’s safe for you. These meditation sessions, while containing some therapeutic properties and being led by a therapist, are not intended as therapy, though we do hope that the experience can be a part of everyone’s overall self-nourishing practice.

Please register to attend for each session. There are 15 spots available at every session. These events are free to attend!

Facilitator: Jessica Engle PhD (she/her) is a clinical psychologist who is new to our community and brings experience in guided meditation and helping to get your circadian rhythm to be your friend. She knows well the benefits of sunlight and social connection through the starry seasons.
